Current Books: I am reading (and loving) The Nowhere Girls by Amy Reed, and I cannot believe that I share an agent with such an amazingly talented writer. If you come near me, I will gush about this book. Be prepared. I am almost through Richard Rohr’s book on the Enneagram. It has been both enlightening and also confusing. I am 99.9% sure I am a Type 9, but a tiny part of me thinks I am a Type 4. Anywho, I will also talk your ear off about the Enneagram. In the car, I am listening to Caesar’s Last Breath: The Epic Story of the Air Around Us. This is mostly research. I am using air as an overall metaphor in my new manuscript. The main character’s name is Airy.

Current Playlist: A couple of Cranberries MP3s, since Delores died, and I saw the news this morning.

Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure: I binged all of season 1 of The Magicians this weekend. I’m not even sure I liked the show, but we were snowed in, and it was easy to just let it keep playing. Plus, classes start tomorrow, so my binge watching time is basically nil until summer.

Current Color: I’ve noticed I buy a lot of aqua/teal lately.

Current Food: I had leftover pizza for breakfast. Don’t judge me.

Current Drink: Pineapple Fanta

Current Favorite Favorite: I am finished ordering/buying textbooks for this semester. My tuition and parking are paid. I like being done with tasks.

Current Wishlist: Here is my Amazon list. My birthday is the 27th. 😉 WISHLIST

Current Needs: A clear idea of the second half of the plot for my new manuscript.

Current Triumph: I graduated from community college in December. 🙂 I had a 4.0.

Current Bane-of-my-Existence: Snow and ice and cold. Either I’m snowed in and can’t work (bye-bye paycheck) or I am at work and can’t take the kids outside so they are wild.

Current Indulgence: Running the fireplace and drinking extra cups of coffee.

Current Outfit: jeans, my 1984 sweatshirt, a big cozy sweater, three pairs of socks (my feet get cold, hush)

Current #1 Blessing: My totally selfless husband who also happens to be handsome and strong and in love with me.

Current Quote:  “That’s what bites about the future — there’s no way to predict it. You just have to show up and see what happens.” ― Kirstin Cronn-Mills, Beautiful Music for Ugly Children

Current Books: This weekend, I finished Ginny Moon by Benjamin Ludwig and The Sound of Gravel by Ruth Wariner. Gravel was absolutely heartbreaking. I started Because I Am Furniture by Thalia Chaltas last night, and I have the newest Louise Penny book, Glass Houses, to start this week.

Current Playlist: Mostly audio books, but I also just finished listening to an Amena Brown album.

Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure: Oreo cheesecake from Burger King… I get them after class some days.

Current Color: Deep purple

Current Food: Burger King on class days and whatever our cook makes for lunch on work days (I work at a daycare).

Current Drink: peach passionfruit refreshers

Current Favorite Favorite: Open mic nights in Tupelo

Current Wishlist: I might want an Apple Watch. I can’t decide. I’d really love a shuttle service from my door to my college next semester. Parking there stresses me out. LOL. More realistically, there are a bunch of books on my wishlist, as always.

Current Needs: I need to get my weekends to be more productive. This semester, I have gotten most of my homework done during the week, and my weekends should be spent doing housework, etc, but I mostly turn into a sloth at 6pm every Friday.

Current Triumph: I completed my verse novel, and I have been ticking items off the to-do list for transferring to Memphis come January.

Current Bane-of-my-Existence: Mostly life logistics, trying to make everything fit, etc… I mean, aside from racism, mass shootings, rape, and all of the other stuff that keeps me frothing at the mouth on a regular basis.

Current Indulgence: Single serve mug cakes

Current Outfit: Black Jordache skinny jeans, purple sweater, purple boots

Current #1 Blessing: My husband. He does so much with the kids and the house, and not feeling all that crappy gender role pressure that exists in so many marriages makes being in school a billion times less stressful.

Current Quote: “Something so hard can be so easy if you just have a little help. In the right place, under the right conditions, you can finally stretch out into what you’re supposed to be.”  ― Hope Jahren, Lab Girl

Books: My main read is How the Light Gets In by Louise Penny. I have been plowing through her books for a few months now. I am also nearing the end of a short story collection by Philip K. Dick, and I returned to some Neruda translations. I copy these out by hand so they are a slow read for me, but it is very helpful to my Spanish learning. I am reading The Myth of Equality: Uncovering the Roots of Injustice and Privilege as part of my peace/justice focus in 2017. It is enlightening and heavy and breaks my heart/makes me angry. I am slowly creeping through The Poet’s Companion by Kim Addonizio. It is really good. I am moving slowly because I stop to write.

Current Playlist: I just finished listening to A Man Called Ove and am binging the What Should I Read Next podcast.

Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure: I can’t think of anything. Even my Starbucks indulgences have all been on gift cards lately. I guess I will go with eating out between class and work sometimes.

Current Color: Bright blue

Current Food: the smokehouse brisket from Firehouse Subs

Current Drink: I order a frappe at Starbucks but change the specifics so I get caramel and toffee. It’s supposed to taste like butterbeer. I love it.

Current Favorite Favorite: Louise Penny. Her books have become my comfort reading lately. I can disappear into Three Pines and have a bowl of cafe au lait in peace.

Current Wishlist: I wish the art and photos I want to have framed and hang on my wall would just magically be framed and hung on my wall. The motivation to make this happen is eluding me right now.

Current Needs: Since summer classes are over and the slower pace of fall semester has set in, I need to make a dental appointment, an appointment for my yearly check-up, etc…

Current Triumph: I was selected to participate in an “UnSlam” poetry competition at the Ink Festival in Tupelo next month. I have memorized the two pieces I want to perform. I am nervous about doing well and taking the stage alongside some really amazing talent, but I am also super excited. Spoken Word is part of my dreams, and I can’t believe I am really doing it.

Current Bane-of-my-Existence: My own fear… my own anxiety… and also the spider bites on my leg. Not dangerous bites, at least, but they are painful and have made me ultra anxious about spiders.

Current Indulgence: I’m sitting here on the sofa, typing this post, when I should be reviewing my Spanish notes from last semester.

Current Outfit: I’m wearing jeans, sneakers, and one of my Honduras tees.

Current #1 Blessing: I am 100% finished with math classes. I passed Beginning Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and College Algebra. I didn’t just pass them either; I made As in all three classes.

Current Quote:  when i had / no friends / i reached inside / my beloved / books / & sculpted some / out of / 12 pt / times new roman  -from The Princess Saves Herself in this One by Amanda Lovelace

Current Books: I am reading and loving State of Wonder by Ann Patchett, thanks to a friend suggesting it. I am listening to the audio of Home by Toni Morrison in the car. I love hearing her read her own work. I’m also reading Living Buddha, Living Christ.

Current Playlist: The three most recent Gungor albums on shuffle

Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure: I grabbed fast food after work today.

Current Colors: Todos de colores

Current Food: Cheddar Peppers from Sonic

Current Drink: Cherry Limeade

Current Favorite Favorite: Color coding my vocabulary lists for Spanish class

Current Wishlist: An extra two hours in my day

Current Needs: Time for my dental cleaning and to make an appointment for my yearly check-up and some extra energy each afternoon

Current Triumph: I made a 100 on my first math test of the summer!

Current Bane-of-my-Existence: Juggling work for five hours after my classes each day. I’m exhausted by the time I come home and I still have homework.

Current Indulgence: I bought a canned Starbucks Refresher for tomorrow morning.

Current Mood: Tired but mostly content

Current Outfit: It is Nattie Day, so I have on my tee that reads, “Kiss my Tiara,” with jeans, and tennis shoes.

Current #1 Blessing: Friends who help me juggle this crazy schedule

Current Quote: “Because you are alive, everything is possible.”  ― Thich Nhat Hanh

Current Books: I just finished Gulliver’s Travels (part 4) for my Brit Lit class and will read A Modest Proposal tomorrow. I’m reading Hollywood Homicide for my fun read, Audacious for verse novel research, and The Divine Dance for my spiritual book with morning coffee.

Current Playlist: With the kids in the car? Welcome to Night Vale podcast…. otherwise, I am binging S-Town and crying a lot.

Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure: Way too many Sonic stops after class, since it is on my way home and I tend to be hungry then.

Current Colors: I don’t even know. I’m wearing blue right now.

Current Food: I just finished eating a small frozen pizza while doing homework.

Current Drink: I am drinking Mello Yello at work everyday. I need to stop.

Current Favorite-Favorite: Pell Grant. I am so thankful for my Pell Grant.

Current Wishlist: Someone to deep clean my house a couple of times per year, an extra day in the week just for rest, a bunch of books…

Current Needs: All the energy and motivation to get through the next few weeks of school, write this book, and juggle my crazy summer schedule…

Current Triumph: I made a 100 on another Biology test, making my average for that class a 100.

Current Bane-of-my-Existence: Needing to work while in school. I wish I could focus on school and writing.

Current Indulgence: I just spent over an hour sitting on the bed listening to S-Town.

Current Mood: Is tired a mood?

Current Outfit: Plaid PJ pants, Le Petit Prince sweatshirt, white socks

Current #1 Blessing: Financial Aid for school

Current Quote:  “The energy in the universe is not in the planets, or in the protons or neutrons, but in the relationship between them.”  ― Richard Rohr, The Divine Dance: The Trinity and Your Transformation

Currently: First Post of 2017

Current Books: I am reading Tapestry of Fortunes by Elizabeth Berg, but it is not holding me quite how an Elizabeth Berg novel usually does. I may have just read too many Berg books in a row. Sometimes, I am like that with authors. I need them in well-portioned doses. I am also reading Finding God in the Waves: How I Lost My Faith and Found It Again Through Science by Mike McHargue and LOVING it. I will post a full review soon. By my bed, I have a volume of poetry called Return of the River: The Selected Poems of Roberto Sosa. He is a Honduran poet, and this book is for both pleasure and book research.

Current Playlist: The Liturgists podcast. Always. Mixed in with a few Gungor songs. I just started the episode called Who Am I?

Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure: I stayed home while my husband and kids traveled for a few days. I did miss the family time, and I loathe being home alone at night, but I got a lot done and I really needed to feel I’d accomplished something over break.

Current Colors: Grey and teal, especially the darker shades of teal.

Current Food: I had Papa John’s pizza last week, and I hadn’t had it in a long time. It was so good.

Current Drink: Coffee, as always, but also I am shaking EmergenC Immune+ powder into my water bottle in the morning this month. I refuse to get sick again. I leave for Honduras in a month, and the sick has to go.

Current Favorite-Favorite: The word “hygge.” My friend, Jen, taught me the word and showed me this website and I am in love. It explains what I have been aching for in my own home.  It isn’t the theme God gave me for 2017, but it is my personal goal for the year.

Current Wishlist: Items to help me accomplish hygge in my home and a few books and such.

Current Needs: A job that pays more for less hours or allows me to work from home or else to feel at peace with the juggle of my current job (which I do like) and school (classes start in 2 weeks).

Current Triumph: I cleaned so much stuff out of my closet/craft cabinet over break. So. Much. Stuff. And I finished reading The Anatomy of Story so I am ready to start scene weaving my new novel.

Current Bane-of-My-Existence: Illness. My kids have been sick and so have I, and I cannot shake the sneezing and the coughing. It just will not go away. It always goes away in Honduras, so I am hoping my upcoming trip will help reset my system.

Current Indulgence: I watched all of the first season of “This is Us” last weekend. I can’t wait for it to return.

Current Mood: First day back to work after break and juggling illnesses in the family? My mood is pensive and exhausted. Probably, by Friday I will be back to normal.

Current Outfit: Dark wash jeans, dark purple sweater over a black tank, dark grey cardigan, light grey sneakers

Current #1 Blessing: The Well… the community I have found there… the friends I have made within that community… They are keeping me sane.

Current Quote: (This explains the answer I gave for #1 Blessing) “I hadn’t realized how much I’d been needing to meet someone I might be able to say everything to.” ― Elizabeth Berg, Talk Before Sleep
