I Owe My Life to Libraries

I owe my life
to libraries.

I owe them all the tales
that grow in me.

My mind is a garden,
sowed with story seeds,
tended over many years
by literary loans and
the long list of loving
librarians.

They farmed the soil
of my heart, digging
to the depths of me
and offering the sunlight
of vast imagination
with each slim and slipping volume
placed by a lavish
librarian,

offering me a book,
a poem,
a hope
that I could read.
